Opta vs. StatsBomb vs. Wyscout:Which Football Data Provider Is Best?

10 min 24.07.2026

Every professional club eventually asks the same question: which football data subscription do we actually need? The three names that come up first are always the same — Opta (Stats Perform), StatsBomb (Hudl) and Wyscout (Hudl). They are the reference points of the industry, and choosing between them shapes how your analysts, scouts and coaches work every day.

Here is the honest answer up front: they are not interchangeable, and for most clubs the real question is not "which one?" but "which combination — and how do we get more out of what we already pay for?" Most top-five-league clubs deliberately subscribe to more than one provider so they can triangulate metrics. This article explains what each provider genuinely does best, what each costs in practice, and where a provider-agnostic analytics layer like GAMECODE.Ai fits into the picture — not as a replacement for these feeds, but as the layer that turns them into metrics your club actually owns.

Opta (Stats Perform)

Opta is the oldest and most established name in football data — so established that "Opta stats" became shorthand for football statistics in general. Now the flagship brand of Stats Perform, it collects event data in real time across 3,900+ competitions using expert human analysts, optical tracking and proprietary AI models, holding over 7 petabytes of historical sports data.

Strengths

The consistency benchmark. Opta's collection methodology is stable across leagues and seasons, which is exactly what you want for league-wide comparisons, historical baselines and models that must not drift when you change competitions.

Real-time delivery. Opta feeds power live broadcast graphics, live win probability and in-game analysis. If you need data during the match, Opta is built for it.

Opta Vision. Since 2022, Stats Perform derives continuous XY positional data for all 22 players from match footage — including automatic off-ball run detection and model-based in-fill for out-of-shot players — in 80+ competitions.

ProVision custom stats. Clubs can create their own derived stats from Opta events and qualifiers and benchmark against their own KPIs inside the ProVision analytics platform.

Limitations

Enterprise-only access. There is no self-serve tier and no published pricing; everything runs through licensing agreements scoped by competition, market and use case. Budget accordingly — and expect the January 2026 FBref licence withdrawal to be a reminder of how tightly the data is controlled.

Standardized by design. The catalogue is vendor-defined. Every club in your league can buy the same feed and the same metrics — consistency is the product, exclusivity is not.

Matches only. Opta covers official competition. Your training ground does not exist in an Opta feed.

Ideal users

Clubs that need a rock-solid, league-consistent data backbone; media and broadcast organizations; betting-adjacent products; any modeling team that values historical depth and stability above bespoke depth.

StatsBomb (Hudl)

StatsBomb, founded in 2017 and acquired by Hudl in 2023, took the opposite bet to Opta: fewer competitions, radically more detail per event. Its data spec records more qualifiers per event than any mainstream alternative, and its signature 360 layer captures a freeze-frame of every player's position at the moment of each shot, pass and key event.

Strengths

The deepest event spec. Pressure events, defensive positioning context, shot freeze-frames — metrics like on-ball value and expected possession value are only possible because the underlying data records defender positions.

Research credibility. StatsBomb's open-data library made it the lingua franca of public football analytics; a generation of analysts learned on it. Over 100 professional clubs use the commercial product.

Hudl ecosystem integration. Since the acquisition, StatsBomb data flows toward Hudl's video and workflow tools, which matters if your analysis department already lives in Sportscode and Wyscout.

Limitations

Coverage vs. depth trade-off. The premium spec covers the competitions clubs ask for most, not everything. For long-tail leagues you will still need Wyscout or Opta.

Still standardized. 360 freeze-frames are richer raw material, but the metrics on top are StatsBomb's definitions. Your club's specific game model is not in the spec.

Matches only, like every event data provider.

Ideal users

Analytics departments building serious tactical and recruitment models; clubs that want the most context per event and have the modeling capacity to exploit it; researchers and analysts (via open data).

Wyscout (Hudl)

Wyscout is not really a data product — it is the world's scouting platform. Virtually every professional recruitment department in Europe uses it, and its match video library (covering leagues far beyond what any event data provider touches) is the largest in the game.

Strengths

Coverage nobody matches. Lower divisions, youth competitions, women's football, South America, Africa, Asia — if a match was filmed, Wyscout probably has it, searchable and clipped.

Video-first workflow. Every data point links to watchable evidence. For scouting, that is the entire point: the number gets you to the clip, the clip makes the case.

Accessible pricing. Unlike Opta and StatsBomb, Wyscout has subscription tiers that smaller clubs and agencies can actually afford.

Limitations

Data depth is not the product. Wyscout event data is collected with a different methodology and a lighter qualifier set than Opta or StatsBomb — treat cross-league, cross-provider comparisons with care.

A library, not a laboratory. You can search, filter and watch; you cannot define your own metrics or run your own models inside it.

Ideal users

Recruitment departments, agencies and analysts who need global video coverage and a proven scouting workflow. For most clubs Wyscout is not an alternative to Opta or StatsBomb — it sits alongside them.

The part nobody tells you: the stack is the strategy

Ask a Premier League analytics department what they subscribe to and the answer is usually "all of the above, plus tracking." Opta for the consistent backbone and live feeds, StatsBomb for modeling depth, Wyscout for scouting reach, SkillCorner or the league's official tracking provider for physical data. The redundancy is deliberate: an xG model built on two independent feeds is more trustworthy than one; a pressing analysis wants both event-data pressures and tracking-derived intensity.

That stack has a consequence that rarely makes it into vendor brochures:

Every club in your league can buy the same feeds. The data is a commodity by design. Whatever edge exists in a standard metric evaporates the moment your rival subscribes.

The definitions belong to the vendor, not to you. Opta's progressive pass is not your coach's progressive pass. StatsBomb's pressure is not your game model's press trigger. Every report you build on standard definitions quietly reshapes your football language around someone else's taxonomy.

None of it covers training — which is where the actual coaching work happens, and (by minutes on pitch) the overwhelming majority of every player's football activity.

This is the gap GAMECODE.Ai was built for.

Where GAMECODE.Ai fits

GAMECODE.Ai is not an event data provider, and this is the one comparison where we should be completely explicit about it: we do not want to replace your Opta, StatsBomb or Wyscout subscription. We want to make it worth more.

The established providers are excellent at what they were designed to do. GAMECODE isn't claiming to do their job better — it's doing a different job. Plot the landscape on two axes — how customised the analytics are, and how automated and scalable they are — and the top-right corner has always been empty: highly customised and fully automated, with the club owning the intellectual property. That corner is where GAMECODE sits.

What that means in practice

Provider-agnostic ingestion. GAMECODE plugs into any existing football data provider and any format — Opta, StatsBomb, Wyscout exports, SkillCorner physical data, your league's tracking feed. Every provider feeds the same unified club profile instead of living in a separate tab.

Your metrics, not the market's. A visual, low-code metric builder (GC:Architect) lets your analysts — not a vendor's roadmap — define KPIs from raw events and tracking, compose them into hierarchical metric trees that mirror your game model, and link every value back to video evidence.

You own the IP. Every algorithm you build is yours. No other club can buy it, see it, or benchmark against it. The same feeds everyone can license become inputs to something only you have.

Training and matches in one workflow. GAMECODE's hardware-agnostic tracking (ball, limb and gaze — even in training) extends your data coverage to the sessions where development actually happens, then computes the same club-defined metrics across both.

A private AI assistant (GC:Pulse) answers plain-language questions against your own data and your own definitions — not a generic model on a vendor's database.

Tamper-proof, similar to a blockchain. Each processing step is cryptographically sealed against the one before it, so a number cannot be quietly altered after the fact. That is why an academy can put medical, sleep and performance numbers for under-16 talent on the same platform, shared only at will — and why a Pulse answer survives the scrutiny that goes with a multimillion-euro decision. A prompt history does not.

What GAMECODE does not do

We do not collect league-wide event data across 3,900 competitions, we do not operate a global scouting video library, and we do not sell a standardized metric catalogue. If you need those, you need the providers above — and GAMECODE will happily consume their feeds.

Field notes: Hudl, SkillCorner and Opta in production

This is not a theoretical pitch — it is how GAMECODE.Ai runs today. We are having great success integrating data from Hudl, SkillCorner and Opta in production, and the experience confirms the thesis of this article: each provider has individual strengths and weaknesses, and none of them needs to be "the winner."

Hudl's event data has been the basis for many of the individual metrics we developed for Edin Terzić — the custom KPI work featured in our success story is computed on top of a Hudl feed.

SkillCorner's broadcast tracking adds player and ball positions for matches far beyond any single league's official infrastructure — the physical and positional context event feeds lack.

Opta brings the consistent, league-wide backbone that keeps cross-competition baselines stable.

Combining them on a platform like GAMECODE.Ai lets clubs cherry-pick the best of each provider and get maximum insight: one feed for consistency, one for depth, one for positional context — all landing in the same club profile and the same club-owned metric trees. The subscriptions you already pay for stop being parallel silos and start compounding.

Use cases

The right tool for each job

01

Best for a consistent league-wide data backbone: Opta. Stability, breadth, live delivery.

02

Best for deep tactical and recruitment modeling: StatsBomb. The richest event spec and the 360 layer.

03

Best for global scouting coverage: Wyscout. The video library and the workflow every recruitment department already knows.

04

Best for turning any of the above into club-owned, philosophy-specific intelligence: GAMECODE.Ai. Custom KPIs, metric trees, training coverage, full IP ownership.

Which should you choose?

If you are choosing your first and only data subscription and you are primarily scouting: Wyscout.

If you are building a modeling capability and can afford the licence: StatsBomb, with Opta added when league-consistent baselines and live data start to matter.

If you already hold one or more of these subscriptions and the question is "why do our expensive feeds produce the same reports as everyone else's?" — that is not a data problem. It is an ownership problem, and it is exactly what GAMECODE.Ai solves: one intelligence layer over every feed you buy, producing metrics that belong to your club alone.

While other clubs use the same generic data, GAMECODE.Ai gives you custom, philosophy-driven insights — join the waiting list to see it on your own feeds.
