Second Spectrum (Genius Sports)

Second Spectrum came out of computer-vision research and made its name in the NBA before becoming the official tracking provider of the Premier League and MLS. Its system was validated by FIFA's EPTS Quality Programme with top marks for positional accuracy at a median latency of 0.859 seconds — genuinely elite, real-time tracking.

Strengths: best-in-class latency and accuracy marks; deep broadcast augmentation business (interactive viewing, AR overlays); the data layer under much of the Premier League's physical and tactical output.

Limitations: it is sold to leagues and media businesses, not to individual clubs; clubs in covered leagues receive the feed for their own competition only. If your matches are not under its cameras, it does not exist for you.

TRACAB (ChyronHego)

TRACAB is the veteran. Its Gen4 (stereo camera pairs at the halfway line) and Gen5 (distributed multi-angle) systems have been independently validated in peer-reviewed research: both produce valid football-specific performance data, with Gen5's distributed architecture measurably more robust when players occlude each other. TRACAB has tracked more leagues for longer than anyone, and its data underpins the Bundesliga's official positional feed via Sportec Solutions.

Strengths: the longest track record; scientifically validated accuracy; broad league adoption; mature live and post-match delivery tiers.

Limitations: same structural reality — league infrastructure, not a club purchase. Data access follows broadcast/league agreements. And as published interchangeability research shows, TRACAB, Second Spectrum and GPS numbers are not directly interchangeable — a club mixing sources needs conversion modeling, because each vendor's processing produces systematically different physical outputs.

Hawk-Eye (Sony)

Hawk-Eye is a different animal: it owns officiating. Goal-line technology in the Premier League, Serie A and Bundesliga; semi-automated offside at FIFA and UEFA competitions; ball-tracking accurate to millimetres. Its SkeleTRACK system captures skeletal data — dozens of body points per player — which leagues increasingly license for performance and broadcast use (most recently the Polish Ekstraklasa, together with an automated tactical camera).

Strengths: unmatched officiating credibility; skeletal (not just XY) tracking; the Sony ecosystem behind it.

Limitations: its performance-data business is younger than its officiating business, and again: leagues and federations are the customer. A club cannot order SkeleTRACK for its training ground.

The coverage gap nobody talks about

Suppose you are a club in a league with official tracking. Congratulations — you receive elite positional data... for your own league matches. Now count what is _not_ covered:

Training — the large majority of your players' actual football activity, and the place where coaching interventions happen.

Youth and reserve teams — playing in venues no league instruments.

Opposition and recruitment analysis beyond your league — the players you want to sign play under someone else's cameras, and that data is not yours to buy.

Cup runs, friendlies, tournaments at grounds without installations.
